It's time for a new approach to learning French verbs. Unlike popular verb guides that require the rote memorization of hundreds of verb forms, this book clearly explains the rules that govern the conjugation of all classes of French verbs—especially the irregular ones that give second-language learners the most trouble. These straightforward, easy-to-understand rules for conjugating French verbs are effective learning tools for both beginning students and more advanced speakers who want to perfect their usage of French verb forms. French Verbs Made Simple(r) has many helpful features that you won't find in any other verb guide: Clear explanations of all verb tenses and forms. The simple patterns and rules that govern the conjugation of all verbs—including those verbs whose irregularities follow patterns that can be easily learned. A detailed discussion of how each verb form is used, with numerous examples. A full explanation of whether a verb should be conjugated with avoir or être, and the conditions under which the past participle is variable—two of the thorniest problems for students of French. An extended treatment of the subjunctive that will help you understand why it is used in some situations but not others. Complete conjugations for 57 basic model verbs (along with 27 "variants") and a comprehensive listing of some 6,200 verbs that indicates which of the models each verb follows. Going well beyond any other guide in the clarity and detail of its explanations—as well as the innovative manner in which individual verbs are linked to model conjugations—French Verbs Made Simple(r) is the only guide to French verbs a learner needs.

With Violin Playtime, the beginner violinist can make music from the very first lessons. In the three books that make up the series, there are over a hundred little pieces, a treasure-trove of attractive tunes - some traditional, some by composers of the past, some newly composed. But this is more than just an easy anthology; the underlying approach is 'learn as you play', and a carefully devised ground plan of technical development makes it a manual in disguise, a tutor without text. This book takes a player from the very beginning to Early Elementary standard. Lively illustrations contribute visually to the excitement of learning the violin. The Mighty Orinoco
Author: Jules Verne
Publisher: Wesleyan University Press
Jules Verne (1828-1905) was the first author to popularize the literary genre of science fiction. Written in 1898 and part of the author’s famous series Voyages Extraordinaires, The Mighty Orinoco tells the story of a young man’s search for his father along the then-uncharted Orinoco River of Venezuela. The text contains all the ingredients of a classic Verne scientific-adventure tale: exploration and discovery, humor and drama, dastardly villains and intrepid heroes, and a host of near-fatal encounters with crocodiles, jungle fever, Indians and outlaws — all set in a wonderfully exotic locale. The Mighty Orinoco also includes a unique twist that will appeal to feminists — readers will need to discover it for themselves. This Wesleyan edition features notes, and a critical introduction by renowned Verne scholar Walter James Miller, as well as reproductions of the illustrations from the original French edition. CONTRIBUTORS: Walter James Miller, Stanford Luce, Arthur B. Evans.

L'art de dictier
Author: Eustache Deschamps
Publisher: Michigan State University Press
The first major French poet to disassociate lyric poetry from its musical setting, Eustache Deschamps gives poetry a value independent of music. This work, Deschamps' ars poetica, examines many aspects of medieval attitudes towards poetry as well as the historical conditions of medieval life. Despite remaining incomplete, L'art de dictier is considered remarkable for its acceptance of the vernacular, its deemphasis of medieval setting, and its author's place in historical poetic tradition. In fact, Geoffrey Chaucer borrowed extensively from his French contemporary, and Deschamps returned the compliment, calling him "grand translateur" in his "Ballade adresse a Geoffrey Chaucer."
