The Bavarian architect Hans Döllgast (1891 - 1974) was accepted into the international canon of modern architecture quite late, but then remained a part of it all the longer. His most important achievements after 1945 were the "creative restorations" of bu ildings in Munich that had been destroyed by war: the Alte Pinakothek, the Basilica of St. Boniface, and the major municipal cemeteries. The work of Döllgast, described by the architect himself as a "combination of undisputable avant - garde and reserved re ar guard", has always fascinated the Munich - based architectural photographer Klaus Kinold. Accordingly, the photographs in this richly illustrated volume were born of empathy and created as part of a personal project. Taken in the early 1980s, they are alr eady historic due to the destruction of some of Döllgast's work. They also pay tribute to Döllgast the combative person, who with his controversially assessed restorations realised exemplary solutions for new construction in historic surroundings. Imagining the Nation in Nature

One of the most powerful nationalist ideas in modern Europe is the assertion that there is a link between people and their landscape. Focusing on the heart of German romanticism, the Rhineland, Thomas Lekan examines nature protection activities from Wilhelmine Germany through the end of the Nazi era to illuminate the relationship between environmental reform and the cultural construction of national identity. In the late nineteenth century, anxieties about national character infused ecological concerns about industrialization, spurring landscape preservationists to protect the natural environment. In the Rhineland's scenic rivers, forests, and natural landmarks, they saw Germany as a timeless and organic nation rather than a recently patchworked political construct. Landscape preservation also served conservative social ends during a period of rapid modernization, as outdoor pursuits were promoted to redirect class-conscious factory workers and unruly youth from "crass materialism" to the German homeland. Lekan's examination of Nazi environmental policy challenges recent work on the "green" Nazis by showing that the Third Reich systematically subordinated environmental concerns to war mobilization and racial hygiene. In the early 19th century, artists and printers embraced the new medium of lithography, an innovative method to mass - produce and distribute images. Known for its collection of French prints and posters, the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University has rich holdings of lithographs made over the course of the 1800s, including examples from lithography's early years in Paris to iconic color posters from the 1890s. Invented around 1796, lithography introduced a new proc ess and new opportunities for the creation and circulation of printed images. Artists, printers, and publishers embraced the new medium for its relative ease and economic advantages as compared with the established printmaking media of woodcut, engraving, and etching. Taking root in Paris around 1815 after the fall of Napoleon's empire, the art and industry of lithography grew in tandem with the city as it became Europe's artistic and urban capital over the course of the nineteenth century. Lithographs play ed a distinct role in both documenting and advancing (and often satirizing) the various and competing art movements of the period as publishers responded to the unprecedented demand for printed images of all types.
